Abstract
A D.E.C.-PDP 11/23 mini computer has been used together with a Tektronic 4663 Interactive Digital Plotter to develop a highly interactive program for the design of plywood web box beams and I-beams. It will accept dimensions and material properties and changes to them at almost any stage of the design and produces a graphical representation of all the design limitations and shows how they are related over a large range of loads and spans. Ideally all the design limiting values should lie simultaneously at the required design point. The designer can alter his input to move the various limitations and can very quickly achieve an optimum design and thereby make considerable material savings.
