Abstract
CAD stands for Computer Aided Design not, as some spuriously suggest, Computer Aided Draughting. CADD stands for Computer Aided Design and Draughting. The pioneering design offices have been using CAD for thirty years and CA Draughting for fifteen. They are just beginning to use CADD.

Anyone interested in applying computers in the design office is recommended to read a book that was published in 1984 and conference proceedings published in 1985 . For those who are interested in specific comparisons between a number of the more popular draughting aids, a report commissioned by the Department of the Environment has just been published.

This paper attempts to explain the development in CADD and the impact it may have in the future.
