Abstract
Vertical drains are widely used for the acceleration of the consolidation process of soft soils, especially in tailings-ponds. Standard one-dimensional models for consolidation are unable to determine the effects of such drains correctly. A two-dimensional radial symmetric model based on a fully three-dimensional approach is introduced and practical results are discussed. Special attention is given to the parallel implementation of the arising numerical problem and to the verification of the results.
