Abstract
A modified augmented Lagrangian method and its associated variational principles for nearly incompressible elastic problems are presented. It is equivalent to the augmented Lagrangian method when specialised to an incompressible problem. The method solves a mixed finite element formulation and is suitable for large scale problems, parallel processing and distributed computing. Convergent analyses of the method are given and applicability of the proposed method to other similar problems is indicated via a simple non-finite element, numerical test problem. A two-dimensional finite element test problem is given using an LBB element.
