Abstract
This paper considers the structural evaluation of external tibial fixators used extensively in the orthopaedic treatment of compound fractures of the tibia. Common problems that arise due to structural inadequacies of existing fixators are malunion and malalignment, limitation of joint movement, pin loosening, delayed union and nonunion. It is believed that a fixator that is sound from the structural viewpoint will mitigate many of these problems.

Tibial external fixators have been analysed extensively, using the finite element method, by earlier investigators. This paper points out serious limitations in the performance evaluation criteria currently used, and proposes improved criteria for comparison among various types of fixators and configurations.
