Abstract
To the engineering surveyor, the computer is an extremely useful tool for data acquisition and for simplifying the laborious task of data processing. To assist students studying surveying at the University of Strathclyde, four suites of computer aided instruction (CAI) programs were developed, encompassing twenty-two separate modules.

This paper discusses methods for improving the limitations of CAI programs. The computer hardware used in both the laboratory and on site is summarised, and three examples of CAI software are described.

The favourable reaction of students using this CAI software and their performance on site and in examinations is also discussed.
