Abstract
The design of reinforced concrete beams is an iterative procedure where the basic concepts of statics, solid mechanics, and strength of materials are used in conjunction with the rules specified in pertinent structural codes. An intelligent computer-aided instructional program, Interactive Concrete BEam Design (ICBED), is being developed to assist civil engineering students in learning this iterative procedure by making it an interactive and dynamic experience. The rationale for the development of this educational tool as well as the overall structure of the program along with some important unique features of the program are presented in this paper.
