Abstract
This paper describes the development of a knowledge-based expert system to advise on the selection of suitable steel framing types for single storey industrial buildings. Different types are considered in fulfilling the function required for the building and the likely cost of production. The cost effectiveness of each framing system is modelled using a collection of rules and an uncertainty model. Each framing system has associated certainty factors representing its cost effectiveness within its feasible range and reflecting its relative effectiveness compared with other framing types. The paper describes the knowledge acquisition, the implementation, and the evaluation stages.
