Abstract
Research was conducted by the Construction Engineering Group at the University of New Brunswick to analyze and predict the operating and maintenance costs of a number of facilities. The design and construction of the facilities were different in many ways although the facilities served a similar function. Differences were observed in the operating and maintenance costs. The paper describes the elicitation and analysis of data and knowledge concerning the total ownership costs of the facilities. Problems encountered using regression analyses, neural networks and the creation of a prototype expert system in attempting to generate cost - time profiles to predict operating and maintenance costs are also briefly described.
