Abstract
The paper describes an application of computer-assisted learning (CAL) in Civil Engineering. The work is being carried out jointly by the Hatfield Polytechnic, Hong Kong Polytechnic and the South China Institute of Technology in Canton. The necessary background to the development includes consideration of the principles of learning and the creation of 'dialogue' in the student-machine interface. Some consideration is also given to developments in artificial intelligence and the 'expert system', and to future developments towards optimised learning rates and automatic assessment recording.
