Abstract
The accuracies of the properties of the analytical quadrilateral finite element formulations for plane-strain equivalent linear elastic deformation are considered. First, the appropriate range for applications in geomechanics of the equivalent elastic parameter, Poisson's ratio, nu, will be discussed. Then the analytical solution of this finite element for both compatible, displacement controlled boundary conditions and incompatible, traction controlled conditions are described and expressed in terms of their eigenmodes of deformation. These results are evaluated by comparing them with various "engineering" solutions for plane deformation.
