Abstract
This paper outlines the development of an object oriented graphical user interface for an integrated design system. The Integrated Design System is aimed at supporting designers in obtaining economical designs for tubular steel trusses.

The paper presents the design of the user interface, involving user profiles, task analysis, design/specification, implementation and acceptance tests. The use of features such as graphics, hotspots, natural idioms, and intuitive procedures, that enable the user interface to enhance the decision support role of the Integrated Design System, are also highlighted.
