Abstract
The use of continuous loading instead of incremental loading for consolidation tests on soil overcomes the principal criticisms of this widely used test. Control of the loading is ideally suited to a small computer. The associated hardware is readily available and the cost is not high if compressed air is used as the loading medium. Software has been developed to allow a choice of loading algorithms, and maximum flexibility is ensured by a disk-based data-management system.
