Abstract
This paper describes the ingredients of an integrated computer system environment for cranes selection for building construction projects. They include the description of the integration process between expert system with other management software such as database, Autocad and spread sheet, a model of the decision making process, an explanation of how methods of cranes selection may be presented, the factors that need to be considered arid a representation of construction expertise. These ingredients are illustrated using a prototype integrated computer system called Crane Advisor, to assist in selecting cranes and planning their operations. Expert knowledge acquired from planning engineers and equipment specialists has been structured in a form suitable for manipulation by the system. Developing the system has illustrated the complex managerial decisions that must be made during the process. The system has considerable value in assisting less experienced personnel in reaching such decisions.
