Abstract
The paper considers the possibility of application of an object-oriented approach in developing finite element analysis software. A basic introduction to object-oriented analysis and design is given followed by an overview of proposed classes. The problems with conventional finite element analysis software and potential solutions offered by object-oriented programs are also described. Objects, classes, methods and inheritance are illustrated using a graphical representation. The design, implementation and maintenance of object-oriented program is compared to that of equivalent procedural program to identify the advantages of the object-oriented approach.
