Abstract
A knowledge based expert system (KBES) for the design and analysis of concrete and steel structures is currently being developed using an artificial intelligent language FRIL. The architecture of the system is explained here, which incorporate uncertainties of information and decision making apart from analysis and design. This current system requires the interface to an external analysis and design program Microstran. Access between the KBES and external programs are fully discussed. Finally, an example of design assessment is given comparing the results of three competing steel designs to BS 5950.
