Abstract
Non-linear analysis and interactive design are two application areas where it may be required to solve simultaneous equations whose coefficient matrix has been only slightly modified in relation to a previous set of equations for which a factorisation of the coefficient matrix is available. The role of the rank of the update is highlighted and methods of obtaining a revised factorisation are discussed which take advantage of low rank in the update. Finally the relative merits of updating are discussed in relation to refactorisation or solving a set of supplementary equations.
